Construction of new District Court building to complete in mid-2023

Construction of new District Court building to complete in mid-2023

The constructions works for the proposed new District Court building at Caroline Hill Road are expected to start in May 2022 and complete in mid-2023, the judiciary said.
The new courtroom will complement the West Kowloon Law Courts Building, which can accommodate cases with a maximum of 50 defendants, 100 legal representatives and 50 family members or members of the general public.

The judiciary will also enlarge 10 courtrooms in the Wanchai Law Courts Building from handling cases with a maximum of six defendants to up to 10-12

The judiciary released latest figures as well, saying that around 74 percent of cases related to the social unrest have been handled.

As of late-July, over 1,900 cases related to the social unrest were brought before various levels of courts and around 1,400 have already been disposed of.

The Judiciary said they have been making the best use of around 135 existing courtrooms suitable for criminal cases for handling around 80 hearings of relevant cases each week.

It is expected that the vast majority of cases at the Magistrates’ Courts would have been disposed of by the end of this year.
